Asus Eee PC T91 dissected

Lets see...

SSD is 50mm so we should be able to use 3rd party SSDs for Dell mini 9.

Right from GPS board is place for SIM card reader.. so if you swap GPS card with 3G + GPS and solder the SIM slot you get internal 3G pretty easily.

RAM ( and future SIM ) are accessible from bottom lid.. so RAM is upgradable.

Dual SD card slots.. one for normal use, one is " Disk-expander Slot"

And yes, non removable battery.. BAD Asus BAD!

There is also manual on FCC so download it to learn all before you get one.

Thanks FCC

Easy 3G, sweet. I wonder if there's enough room for a 5.5mm 1.8" in there with light modification?

Do we know how big the ssd will be, if it is definitely an ssd as despite these photos many asus reps have said it may be a hdd (arrrrrgggggghhhhhhh)

So is it safe to assume that the large black thing in the fourth picture is the battery? Is it soldered on to the unit or does it simply "clip-on"? Even though the battery won't be user replaceable, if it ever gets to the point where a new battery is required, it would be nice to be able to buy one and put it in without assistance.

Oh yeah and WOOHOO! I'm so stoked about the T91!

i love fcc they always have good pictures from inside. but there is something to do cause no ndraft and the ssd will be slow as the other ones from asus i think. but the non removeable battery is more than bad if the batterytime is under 4 hrs.

btw: posting on sunday is new, right? :-)

Andy said...

@ Saperalot the ssd in the s101 was extremely quick, Xp in 25 sec's and about 89mb/s read and 50mb/s write. Thats not slow and I think thats the latest (even though it was a while ago) model that used ssd's. Would be surprised if the final version comes with just g not ndraft as almost every recent eee, or even netbook, has draft. I agree with the last point though if its under 4 hours web browsing thats a deal breaker for me I want atleast 5 hours ideally (read: 7-8)

BTW completely off-topic what happened to that eee 901 with 16Gb superquick ssd and huge battery that tney were going to release link:

No external battery = wait for next one.

Andy said...

LOL @ "No external battery = wait for next one." because its so true just look at what happened with the seashell 1008ha as before its even hit the streets the follow up with an external battery - quite nice if you had pre-ordered as it gives you time to cancel rather than receive it and then it be out of date the next week.

what ever happened to the "chocolate" keyboard?? is it only on the T101??

and arrr.... 50mm SSD... I want to put my fastest runcore 128GB on that thing!

HeartBeat said...

me no like!

Unknown said...

@ Andy
I have a Runcore now in my 900 so i am a bit regaled. :-)

Very disappointing. No HD. No removable battery.

Andy, I don't want an external battery. That means having to have another charging system to handle THAT battery. Kind of defeats the point of the netbook being small and light, no?

Not to mention the price - it's estimated at US$650!

I think I'll go back to thinking about the Gigabyte M1028X. I just wish that one wasn't so expensive - but at least it isn't so crippled - it even comes with an ExpressCard/34 slot.

Maybe the T101 will be a better choice.

Ugh, an SD slot designed for expanding the primary storage? Isn't that redudant these days? Unless they plan on putting a laughably small SSD in the T91 it in the first place... which would be even worse!

Sounds great.
I can´t await for T101.
It will be more "hackable"

Unknown said...

this looks good... the k/b is the old one... just like the 701 but i can live with it... with a fast runcore in it.. it should be fast and good

Andy said...

@JON4TH4N - the t101h definitely has chicklet keyboard however asus have also said that the t91 keyboard will change on the final production version, whether or not that means slightly larger keys or a full blown chicklet keyboard is anyone's guess

@thewerewolf - I meant a removable battery ala most other eee's eg 1000h, which definitely makes it more portable due to a longer battery life - I called it external since it wasn't internal as in inside the case.

The T101h is the one for me - bigger keyboard, bigger battery (almost certain) and probably upgradeable to a standard 2.5 sata ssd with super fast speediness but guys don't buy your runcores just yet, see what asus bring out you'll kick yourself if its like the 64Gb one in the s101 which as I've already said was pretty much as fast as anything runcore have and that was in November

I'm also waiting for the 10 inch screen of the T101. Does anybody have any idea when it'll start being rolled out to retail?

Hi.,
i just tried to put RunCore 64GB SSD 50mm
http://www.memoryc.com/storage/solidstatedisk/64gbruncorepataminipciedellmini9.html
It does not work, show error on Hard Disc., cannot boot to it or cannot be found during install.

Andy g. said...

Just tried same version of runcore 50mm ssd 32gb. Show hard drive error on booting. In bios t91 shows runcore 32g-c hard drive, but in boot priority i cannot choose it. It can be bios issue, but also I noticed runcore has different pin layout, all pins on original asus ssd are separated, but on runcore ssd two pins connected together in one. Runcore on a wepsite stating this particular 50mm ssd compatible with asus t91.

Andy g. said...

I tried the same runcore 50mm ssd 32gb. Error on boot. In bios t91 showing runcore 32g-c hard drive, but I cannot choose it in booting priority. I have cloned runcore from original asus hard drive, so I don't think it is ariver issue, cut be a bios issue. But runcore on a website stating 50mm ssd compatible with asus t91. Is anyone tried super talent 50mm ssd?

andy g. said...

just did asus t91 bios downgrade from 0403 to 0303, but still no luck 32GB RunCore Pro 50mm PATA Mini PCI-e SSD from http://www.memoryc.com/storage/solidstatedisk/32gbruncorepataminipciedellmini9.html .still having hard disk error on booting an press f1 to resume. i can see runcore 32g-c ssd in ide configuration showing 32.2gb size, but cannot choose it in boot device priority tab, because it does not show there. runcore ssd works perfectly on mini usb cable supplied( but mini usb on ssd very loose i have to bend a cable a bit and use sticky tape to secure in place). so it probably means runcore 50mm ssd not supported by asus t91 and runcore website lying about compability with asus t91, or my ssd faulty and i am going to send it back to memoryc.com for replacement. so is anyone had any luck to upgrade asus stock ssd?

Andy, non of the current 50mm SSDs will work on T91.. I tested.. and explained it on my First Impressions video.

It needs to be 50mm SATA pcie which does not exist right now.

I am making a hack with 70mm one soon..

.. sorry for late reply, we are moving to new house and there is million things todo

Can anyone point me to a suitable sim card reader for this.

Nash said...

Hey JKK,
Any chance of a video demonstrating how to open the chassis of the t91? Or even just some brief instructions, or a link to a video with a very similar method of opening?

Thanks

Unknown said...

Hey JKK
can you post the instruction on how to install 3g module to T91MT
Thanks

I know you guys might be in the US but I have a T91 and just found this...http://www.solidstatecentral.com.au/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=364

Hi JKK,

I would also like to know if you've already tried to install in the T91MT a UMTS module. Where is the antenna go? Can I use the DVB-T antenna an external UMTS Atenne? What about GPS modules that also have GPS?

For Feadbacks I would be very happy!

can the screen be swapped with the 91mt to make it multitouch?

Hey JKK,
MyDigitalSSD 128GB 50mm Bulletproof mSATA (Mini SATA PCI-e) SSD - MDMS-50128

do you know if the following could be inserted into the 8.9in T91MT. It seems to be a larger size of the 64 you said would work above.
Thanks for your thoughts,
G22G

JKK said...

Greg, 128gb is few mm thicker than 64gb so it doesn't fit.
