Dell Mini 9's shipping with smaller batteries than they should

Quality control problem or margin seeking?

Peter has been testing his Dell Minis and noted that one of his Mini 9's had smaller 24Wh battery than on the other one. Marking on the both states it should be 32Wh.

I just checked mine with a battery software. It's 24Wh too. The review unit I had earlier had 32Wh 4 cell.

So if you were wondering how Mini 9 got 4 hours on reviews but only 3 hours on your use, this is the reason.. If you are shopping one, check the battery label, if it starts with KR it's the cheapo, if it starts with CN it's ok.

But is it just bad quality control or is Dell trying to push up their margins by using cheaper batteries?

Not good...

UPDATE: Forum members now testing more.. looks like a battery firmware error and difference seems smaller too

Did he think about a defect Battery-Cell?

´cause 32Wh/4cells=8Wh/cell 8Wh/cell*3cells=24Wh

the last Time, i´ve heard a lot of defective Cell´s in Eee 1000H.

Another point in the Samsung NC10 book.

Its not a defective cell. If you run Notebook BatteryInfo it reports both the Designed Capacity of the battery and the Full Charge Capacity. Both show the same numbers, e.g. either 35WHr (4-cell) or 24WHr (3-cell).

the good battery is actually 35Wh :P

and is a manufacturing issue, not just random dead cells.

Latest news is that the original poster did a rundown test (and so did some other people). The "KR" battery that is reporting a smaller capacity (24Wh) does just as well (in fact, slightly better) as the "CN" battery reporting 32Wh. So not to worry after all: it seems to be only a battery reporting issue, but not a battery capacity issue. See http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/battery-capacity-24-wh,-not-32-wh-t1723s110.html#p13788

I have a KR battery and achieve 3.5 real-world hours. I'm great.

Dell propaganda machine working overtime.... right Darin....

Dell email support keeps telling me this is a BIOS problem, to wait for a BIOS upgrade, they won't ship a new battery.

I have a KR battery, and through Ubuntu the battery info comes up with a design charge of 24.4Wh, even though it says 32Wh on the battery, and in the user guide.

I wonder if dell support can shed any light on this?

I recently looked at my KR battery on the office security x-ray machine (not as strong as an aeroport machine) and think I saw 4 cells; but, on one cell I couldn't see an end contact as I sow on the others. Maybe someone else could check this out. Frank

Dell's latest BIOS update (revision 4) should correct the reporting issue.

Yeah, original dell mini 9 battery is smaller life. But you can buy a replacement battery for it,generally, the capacity of replacement is high.
