How to add internal 3G HSDPA to Asus Eee PC

Mobility means mobile connectivity to me. So this had to be done..

I needed to cut 3mm of plastic away here.

and about 3 mm slice from this thin plastic wall.

This is ZadaCOM 3G+ HSDPA modem opened.

After desoldering connectors away I soldered these wires as shown here.

SIM card slot... All working... Surf is up!

Questions? Comments?

This mod works on any eee pc without the extra pcie slot. ( so it's not good for 8G models ( pcie slot has that 8g ssd drive ) and not as easy on first 4g models with pcie connector in place ( you would need to cut 20 mm of from the pcb to make it fit) )

did you lose a USB port with this addition?

JKK said...

no, i didn't lose usb port, as i took the signals from mainboard pcie pins.

you can see it in this picture: http://bp1.blogger.com/_ZKlSQm2j7TI/R3Qkzj6RHmI/AAAAAAAABjg/qnm45JgY05M/s1600-h/IMG_0701.JPG

I just wanted to let you know that i think you are doing some great mods! They seem to be just a bit over my head (i've got it all down but the soldering) but I love to continue reading about you pushing the eee to its full potential.

Excellent job! 2 quick questions:
1. Where are the antenna wires?
2. What is the clear plastic that you used to cover the HSDPA module inside the notebook? (I assume that is to shield it)

JKK said...

1. Where are the antenna wires?

-you can see that white and black wires on the pix .. and that white wire on last pix from the botton

2. What is the clear plastic that you used

-it just good plastic tape for chielding. you can get that from electronics stors

That Eee PC is looking better by the day.

I guess you could start a business just selling modded Eee's :)

Now, all you need is a GPS inside and it will be a all-in-one perfect UMPC :)

what an amazing eee hack! i'll definitely try this once i receive my eee! (mid-january, according to nutrius.de)

Just a small pet peeve - in the speed test it's megabits and kilobits, not megabytes and kilobytes per second. :) Great work, keep it up!

Are you selling any units with the 3G mod already in place?

Could you do a TinyXP install on the eeepc for us and see how it fares? I think it should fly on that thing! :D

I'm trying to wait tell after CES to buy a UMPC. I saw your Right up on the Advantage and went and got one but its just not enought for me i need more so if you can Please test

I know the easiest way to use an antenna would be to use the built in wifi (2400mhz) antenna, BUT it's for the wrong frequency range. Wireless broadband cards operate in the 800, 900, 1800, 1900 and 2100mhz bands. With my limited knowledge of amateur radio and antenna building skills, it tells me that your wifi antenna is too short and could cause problems now and in the future such as reduced transmit and receive signal strength and burning up the output transistors on the card because of too high vswr on the antenna (reflected power back to the transmitter from the antenna because it's not made for that frequency range). I am not saying I know better than you, I'm just saying that you could get better transmit/receive power if you used the proper antenna.

An idea could be that you could use the antenna that came with the usb device and just desolder it from the board and remove (carefully) the plastic cover on it so the wire(s) are left. Get a pigtail antenna connector from something broken or not used for the mini pcie card and solder it to the antenna the card came with and put it in an empty area of the eee or put it inside the display lid where one of the old wifi antennas was. Your 3g card would last longer, produce less heat, and "get out" much better than a "random" length of wire.

Nice hack JKK... You beat me to it!

I was going to publish a very similar mod using a Sierra Wireless 875U HSDPA modem. Unfortunately, lack of time kept me from doing this in time for the holidays :)

JKK said...

Hi tnkgrl!

Please publish your mod soon!

I know people want to see it as 875U is easier to find in many places.

Are you using the usb board too or just the module?

David Shernoff said...

JKK, you are doing the best mods for the eeepc i've seen on the whole web, and i've been looking a lot!

mongoose8p said...

Sorry Dumb question, but where can you purchase these on the internet? I'm from the US! Thanks jkk fantastic job again! My touch panel is on the way!

JKK said...

mongoose8p:

U should maybe wait for tnkgrl to publish this mod using Sierra Wireless 875U HSDPA modem...
..those are easier available.

I don't know any place selling this Zadaco in US..

tnkgrl said...

JKK, my mod will use the SW 875U UBS board (for the existing SIM holder), but it will fit any Eee (other the the 8G since the space is used by the SSD)- it will probably use a screen mounted penta-band antenna.

Try other mini PCI-e instead of SIERRA and see what will happen...;)

Yogesh said...

OK I'm convinced! I'm going to buy an EEE PC, and try this mod for myself :o)

JKK, I'm in England, and "3 Mobile" offers a 3G USB device, which appears to be the Huawei E220 USB Modem.

http://threestore.three.co.uk/payg/?modem=1

Do you have any idea if it will fit in the same space in the EEE PC?

Hello JKK:

Some cool stuff you have going with your eepc - Some Questions -

1. Do you have a full copy of windows or a modified version?

2. If you have a full version, how much of your hard drive does it take up?

Thanks

jkk said...

1. yes, full xp pro

2. it takes about 2.1 GB

Anonymous said...

Ok, Thanks - I Take It Your Have The 4gig Version?

Thanks

jkk said...

yep, 4G

Thanks Again - Could You Please Varify If The Following Would Work In Conjunction With The EEPC?

jkk said...

sorry, but there is no way i could confirm that it's ok..

.. panel needs to be about 165 mm x105 mm x 1 mm to fit but i didn't find that info there...

Anonymous said...

Thanks for looking anyway - I think ill just leave mine as it is for the moment.

I am definetly going to keep the Linux OS that came with it on there.

I was thinking of booting windows off a SD card, Memory Stick or An External HDD - Do you have any suggestions on how i can do this?

Thanks

hi, jkk,
from the photos, it seemed that the HSDPA Module you used(ZadaCOM 3G+) includes a Mini PCIe module and a USB conversion board, why not use the Mini PCIe module directly? Do the soldering work to use USB interface is more difficult, isn't it?

Carlos Martins said...

to: Fromjw

when you use the mini-PCIe connector, the Eee disables the internal Flash. It seems that Asus intended for the mini PCIe to be used only as a SSD expansion socket for the 8GB model.

Thats why we can only use the USB connections present in there.

Where did you get your 3G simcard? How much did you buy it for? Did you have to sign a contract with a cellphone company to get one?

Hi, great mod. I've got a tablet with an empty pcmcia card slot. there's a usb port just beside it. Do you think i can do the same and throw the hsdpa pcb into the pcmcia slot?

any dis-advantage over getting a pcmcia card? I've one sonyericsson 300 pcmcia card but it sticks out about 1cm from the tablet which is what i don't want. was thinking of making the hsdpa modem internl.... possible? pls share your views and advise.

Thanks!

es, i have to have a SIM card to make it work.

Francesco,

I'm sorry but they would not work on it..

I just tested today, and if you insert any other device than SSD to second pcie slot, it disables the first SSD too..

Not even the first pcie slot work ( the wifi ) with 3g modules.....

Hi Jkk

Very nice mod. I bought Zadako 3G+ usb modem, but the board is different from your photos. No battery, slightly different layout and sierra MC8780 instead MC8775. My problem is I am not able to find + and _ on my board (because there is no battery). Any suggestion ?

Hugo said...

Greetings jkk!

Which Zadako modem did you use exactly? There are three different types to buy on their website: ZadaCOM 3G+ 1.8; ZadaCOM 3G+ 7.2; ZadaCOM 3G+ HSUPA

Please clarify. Thanks a lot. By the way, great mod!

Hugo
